News of the Week:

   DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Dr James Marsters,
a deaf dentist, who departed us last week. Word of his
death reached DeafDigest too late to be included in last
week's edition.
   As a matter of coincidence, DeafDigest, 9 years ago,
posted this News of the Week as follows:

   Dr James Marsters, a deaf orthodontist, has given a $85,000
gift to the NTID - to be earmarked for purchases of fiber optic
equipment for classes taught in that field.
   We all know that Robert Weitbrecht developed the first TTY
modem, way back in 1964 - but it was Dr Marsters that provided
Weitbrecht with the idea, the inspiration and a kick in the
right direction. Who knows - without Marsters the first deaf TTY
network may not have been started as early in the sixties!

   DeafDigest editor, years ago, had the privilege of being
given a private tour of the dental suite in Pasadena, CA
where Marsters owned. It was an unforgettable experience.
   Thank you, James for helping create a TTY network where all
groups in the deaf community were able to participate on an
equal basis.

   Normally when Deaflympics are held, the host nation government
would stay in the background as a gracious host, allowing the
Deaflympics committee to run the show.
   It is different in Taiwan where the Deaflympics is coming
up next month. The government is playing a high profile.
Why?
   The government is using the Deaflympics to show the world
that they wish to come out of the isolation forced on the nation
ever since 1949 when mainland China went Communist.
   Just hope the Taiwan stance will be beneficial to the
deaf in the long run, years after the Deaflympics have become
a memory.

   For years and years everywhere, we always hear of deaf
athletes complaining that the deaf opponents they play
against, were actually hearing, and faking their
deafness.
   And the opponents have always denied they were
hearing.
   But now this - a "deaf" soccer team from Ghana went on
a trip to play against a deaf team from Australia. Only that
the "deaf" team consisted of hearing players.
   The Australians are upset, and are demanding monetary
damages. And in the meantime the sports official in Ghana,
that organized the "deaf" team, has been arrested!

A DEAF CLOCK REPAIRMAN
   We have had many deaf people that repaired wrist
watches. But have we ever had a deaf person that repaired
a town tower clock. This is a big clock in downtown where
people look at it and depend on it to get the right time?
   Yes. The late Lee Brody, who was famous for his past
Phone TTY business, was a tower clock repairman during
his younger days.
   The clock was in downtown Fairlawn, New Jersey,
and he walked up the tower from time to time to make
the repairs.

   Many deaf people travel all over the world.
And when we travel we carry our passports and our
visas.
   Deaflympics is coming up next month. We hope
there will be no passport and visa problems among
our deaf athletes when they arrive at Taiwan.
   Some years back Australia hosted the World
Federation of the Deaf, but the government refused
to allow deaf delegates from some African and
Asian nations.
   The government was afraid that some of these
delegates may sneak out and stay in Australia
after WFD has ended!
   Yes, the WFD officers were very upset.

   Buzzwords come and go, be it Hearing Buzzword or
a Deaf Buzzword.

SONIC IS NOT DEAF-FRIENDLY?
   A DeafDigest subscriber that lives in upstate New York
stopped at a Sonic fast food eatery for quick bite.
   No one could enter the eatery. They have to order
from outside. There was no "easy" menu for the deaf
patron to point to.
   The deaf patron confronted one of the Sonic
employees, who disclaimed responsibility, saying
it was the "headquarters" that made the decision
not open the Sonic facility to the public.
   Very discriminatory, sighs DeafDigst!

A MOVIE MADE IN 1966
   There was a movie, titled "Silent World, Muffled
World" that was produced in 1966.
   It illustrates issues deaf people face - social
acceptance, education, causes of hearing losses,
and slow progress towards equality.
   Year 1966 and Year 2009 are 43 years apart but
the more things change, the more things remain the
same!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Some people may not realize that most realtime broadcast
captioning and remote CART services are provided from
captioners' homes.  

In the early days of captioning, captioners worked from
the offices of the large captioning companies, but more
and more captioners have begun working from their homes over
the last 20 years.  

Captioners need home offices with the proper equipment
and backup systems in place to assure reliable coverage. 

Probably the most important element in a captioner's home
office is electrical power.  Depending on where a captioner
lives and what sort of backup is in place with other
captioners to cover assignments, a captioner may need an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in case of a power
failure.  

This will keep the captioner's equipment running for 15
to 30 minutes, which should be enough time to notify another
captioner to take over the assignment. 

If a captioner does not have another captioner who could
quickly take over in an emergency, he or she will need to
keep captioning for a longer time in the event of a power
outage.  Then a generator might be necessary.  If a captioner
is captioning a news broadcast for a California station
where the weather is beautiful, it would be hard to explain
to the viewers that the captions were interrupted because
of thunderstorms in Texas

   After Jamaica, Belize is next. Jamaica, after years
of refusing to allow the deaf to drive, has relented.
   The deaf people of Belize are demanding that they
have the same rights to drive, and are now lobbying
the government.

incompetent. Still, the state officials kept
him in prison for years.

result:
in what probably is considered to be the first
deaf-related case to reach the Supreme Court,
the justices freed him.

comment:
The robbery only netted him just five dollars.
Did the punishment fit the crime? No, but the
state officials overly punished him.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

   Finally - SOLD - is the campus of the now-closed
Nebraska School for the Deaf. A church ministry which
submitted a bid for the campus in an auction last year
but withdrew it, has decided to make the purchase.
   The purchasing group said they will set aside part
of the campus as a museum on Deaf Heritage.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

   A new member of the RIT Board of Trustees is Jim Macfadden, president
and CEO of his Macfadden & Associates Inc, Silver Spring, MD high
tech firm that does business with a number of federal government agencies.
   Jim, a Gallaudet graduate and a hall of fame athlete, also heads up the
National Deaf Business Institute and also serves his alma mater as a member
of the Board of Associates.
   To keep things straight - he is on the RIT board as opposed to serving on
the NTID board, which are two separate boards.

(editor's note: Jim has sold his business; he is no longer on the RIT
board; he is currently chairs the Gallaudet Presidential Search
Committee)

   Way back in 1965, deaf sports leaders were complaining
that it was difficult for their Deaflympics participants
to raise the necessary funds in order to take part.
   Deaf sports leaders are still complaining, in year 2009,
of the same thing.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Coordinator will assume and perform duties and
responsibilities to provide employment training and job coaching
to deaf adults who have additional disabilities.  The Coordinator
will supervise full-time staff; hire, assign, and supervise job
coaches; develops and maintains interagency cooperation; develops
consumer service plans; complete monthly, quarterly, annual reports
required by RSD and VESID; administer program funds, check requests,
purchase orders;  and attend and lead meetings as necessary.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Bachelor's degree in Human Service, Social Work, Counseling,
Special Education, or Vocational Rehabilitation Prior experience in
Employment Services

Proficiency in American Sign Language required
