News of the Week
The Deaf Seniors of America conference has come
and gone last week in Las Vegas.
The newly elected officers are:
president - Jim Potter
vice president - Mack Harris
secretary - Nancy Kensicki
treasurer - Joe Rose
board member - Ron Nomeland
board member - Barbara Schmidt
board member - Renwick Dayton
the group will serve DSA for the 2009-2011
term. The next DSA conference is at Windy City
(Chicago)
..
It is terrible to be deaf. This is the attitude exhibited
by the residents of Dadhkai, a village hidden in the remote
section of India.
This tiny village consists of 47 families, and each one
has at least a deaf member. This has been going on since
1931.
Why the high incidence of deafness? Interbreeding. And
said a village resident:
The birth of a child is a very happy occasion, meant to be
celebrated. But here the birth of a child leads to
harassment not only for the parents but for the entire village
The village needs a massive attitude adjustment!
..
Leon Lim is a promising deaf artist, out of Malaysia, but
attending graduate classes at New York University.
He won an invite to exhibit his works at the Central Academy
of Fine Arts (Cafa) Museum in Beijing this week.

ANOTHER DEAF WOMAN AT THE HALL OF FAME
Last week DeafDigest mentioned four deaf women
that have been inducted into the National Women's
Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY.
There is one more. It is Helen Brooke Taussig,
a pioneering physician and cardiologist. Her
discovery with a heart operation procedure has
saved many lives.
A FAMOUS SINGER USES SIGN LANGUAGE
One famous singer uses sign language at home.
He is not deaf, and his wife is not deaf.
Then why does he use sign language to
communicate with his wife?
Because he wants to save his voice for
singing; he is afraid that if talks too much,
it will hurt his voice.
DeafDigest does not know if he signs in
ASL or with gestures and body language!

LOSING VALUABLE DEAF HISTORY
Few years ago a deaf man, who lived in
Washington, DC, died of old age.
His hobby was Deaf History. He went to the
Gallaudet library all the time to research
many books and many magazines for his deaf
history work.
When he died, all of his deaf history
knowledge, information and facts went with
him to his grave.
Why? He wanted his work to be a secret and
did not want to share his work with others!
It is a shame.

THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD
Is there such a thing as the "Best Job in the
World?"
Ben Southall, not deaf, will begin a new job
that is for 6 months only as the caretaker of the
Hamilton Island. He will be paid $121,000 for his
work.
What about the deaf? DeafDigest editor knows of
a deaf person who hated his regular job. He hated
it so much that he would often skip work and
stay home.
He became friends with a wealthy man, a senior
citizen, who was not deaf. This senior citizen
needed a full time chauffeur to drive him around
few times a day.
One thing led to another, and the deaf man took
an early retirement from his hated job to take
the new job as chauffeur.
The Best Job in the World for him? You decide!
ONE THING A FORMER TEACHER DID NOT TELL
A while back DeafDigest listed "10 Things
They won't tell you" - which was in reference
to secrets professionals know but won't share
with the public.
A DeafDigest subscriber was offended. Well,
many years ago, DeafDigest editor, as a kid,
attended an oral school for the deaf in New York
City.
Sign language was forbidden (though many of
deaf kids signed on the sly). The editor had a
teacher who was a Coda, and was a fluent signer,
and he was very lipreadable in the classroom.
Many years later, the editor bumped into the
old Coda teacher at Gallaudet where he was
attending a workshop. Naturally in sign language,
there was a conversation and the old teacher
said:
I was easy to lipread, but I do not always speak
that way. I made it a point to always slow down
when I speak. But if you watched me speak away
from the classroom, you would not understand a
single word I would say.
DeafDigest editor never forgot that comment!
And so, it becomes the 11th thing that we are
not being told.
JUST DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY IN INDIA
Newspapers in India are forever calling the deaf
as deaf-mute or deaf-and-dumb when printing stories
about them.
Anyway, Mirakle Couriers, a parcel delivery
company in India, hires deaf couriers. Each
delivery has a message pasted on top. The
message says:
Delivered and sorted by deaf adults
Is it that really necessary to tell the world
that it is so amazing that a deaf person could
deliver parcels?
Or maybe there is a reason - bias against the
deaf in India is so overwhelming, that the public
needs to be constantly reminded that the deaf can
do anything, except to hear?
TALES FROM FORMER DEAF PIZZA DRIVERS
(series to be run on a weekly basis until list of
tales run out)
I worked at one store where tips were bad. To get more
money in tips, I applied for a job at a different
store where tipping was much better. The manager,
upon learning I delivered pizzas at the poor-tipping
store, practically rolled down the red carpet, welcoming
me into his store! The tips were great at the new store.
If you are a former Deaf Pizza Driver and have an
interesting tale, please share it with:

..............................................................
WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?
DWD
DWD means Driving While Deaf, part of the jargon the
cops use.
This describes deaf drivers that are stopped on a traffic
violation and then play-act "me dumb, me deaf" in hopes
of getting out of a traffic ticket!

(just scroll down on the screen until you see the picture)
The picture was hung on the walls of the Women's Rights
National Historical Park, Seneca Falls, NY.
While the picture is not deaf-related, as intended by
cartoonist Bulbul (first name is not known), it is
definitely deaf-related from a deaf person's point
of view.
DeafDigest editor never heard of Bulbul; her web site

Question of the week:
Q, Why Netflix Doesn't Offer Subtitles or Closed Captions?
A. Netflix said they have to figure out a way to let
individuals turn the words on or off. There is an issue
of English subtitles on foreign language movies as opposed
to English subtitles on English speaking movies.
DeafDigest says it is a cop out!
