News of the Week
SSA has a large number of deaf employees in its
national workforce. And SSA still wants to hire more
deaf.
This is great inasmuch as SSA has been given the
green light to hire the disabled, the deaf included.
..
Could a deaf person advise US State Department on
disability-related policy concerns?
Hope so, as this agency has been on the search for
nominations to serve on the Advisory Committee on Persons
with Disabilities.
Not sure, however, if we have deaf individuals among
the nominees, which closed last week.
..
There is a deaf-operated employment agency in
Great Britain. It is the Dering Employment Services,
and it is now into its fourth year of operations.
This company has a goal - to expand internationally.

TO AVOID DEAF SCAMMERS
We have many hearing scammers. We also have some
deaf scammers, who want to cheat deaf people of their
money.
How can we avoid these deaf scammers?
- no such a thing as sure money investment
- ask the scammer for their investment certificates
- ask who is the scammer's accounting firm
- ask the scammer for their web site
- if they promise high interest rates, it is a fake
We have had two deaf scammers that cheated deaf people.
One went to jail; another is in big trouble now.

National Deaf Business Institute Re-launches Website Highlighting Deaf

National Deaf Business Institute Re-launches Website Highlighting Deaf
Business Owners
Washington, D.C. [July 4, 2009] - The National Deaf Business Institute
(NDBI) is pleased to announce the re-launch of its website www.ndbi.org
as developed by Viable, Inc, a deaf-owned and deaf-operated company that
develops communication access technologies and provides video relay
services. "This updated, user-friendly site allows us to share news of
interest about deaf business owners," said Ronald Sutcliffe, NDBI
executive director. "It'll also have a blog and allow us to bring together
deaf business owners around the nation to share ideas, thoughts and
experiences."
NDBI was founded in 2002 with the purpose of helping deaf people develop
skills to start, manage, and grow successful businesses. With the mission
of advancing entrepreneurship by deaf people through education, research
and outreach, NDBI?s vision is to build economic power among deaf persons
by helping increase business productivity. In order to instill a solid
entrepreneurial spirit among deaf people, NDBI believes that it is
critical for the community to have strong leaders and visible role models.
Experienced deaf entrepreneurs are also able to volunteer a few hours
every week for any of our various programs for youth, college students, or
professionals.
"NDBI offers a variety of services to not only deaf business owners, but
also to all deaf persons who work in the field of business, in both the
public and private sectors," NDBI President Louis Schwarz said. "We strive
to develop and serve a community of deaf business leaders by offering
programs that provide equal access to the resources available to any
business owner. The programs also will provide tools deaf people can use
to overcome barriers imposed by society."
Sutcliffe added, "We are really appreciative of the generosity exhibited
by Viable, and are pleased they are equally committed to promoting the
expansion of deaf business ownership in this country. This website is
only one of many steps to this accomplishment, and we?re very excited
about the possibilities ahead of us."
Deaf business owners are encouraged to visit www.ndbi.org , enter their
businesses in the directory, and share news about their businesses or
professional accomplishments.

BAD EXPERIENCE AT AN AIRPORT
A late deafened man flew to Australia, and
was checked at the gate by the Australian customs
inspectors.
The inspectors refused to believe that the traveler
was deaf because his speech was perfect. The man
tried to explain that while he became deaf he still kept
his perfect speech.
As a result he was sent to a doctor for a full
medical check up to make sure he was deaf and was not
faking his deafness! The doctor then gave him permission
to enter Australia.

A TALE OF TWO RESTAURANTS
For a deaf person to go to a restaurant for
a dinner, it is simple. Just point to the menu
and tell the waiter the meal choice.
Two restaurants were a challenge.
- at Vaipando, all patrons are given swipe
cards where they use it at the counters to
order their food and then use their cards
to add up the charges.
- at Fogo de Chao, the patrons must use their
green cards to tell the waiter to bring
different meal choices to them.
A deaf person, not familiar with either
restaurant, could run into communication
problems with the restaurant staff.
Would it be just easier and simpler to
go to a traditional restaurant instead of a
gimmick restaurant?
ON THE AIRPLANE
It is often that on an airplane ride, especially
on a huge jet, that when someone is ill, the
flight attendants would ask around among passengers
for physicians. And that there would be two or
three on board.
Now - what about this - what if a deaf person
suddenly has a communication issue? Would the
flight attendant be able to find interpreters on
the plane? Or at least of someone that knows
signs (Coda, teacher of the deaf, social worker
of the deaf, etc?).
VALUE OF DEAF PETITIONS
Seems that every time there is something that irks
the Deaf Community, then petitions are passed around,
asking all of us to affix our signatures.
Are these petitions worth the time and effort?
No, according to a Deaf Political Insider (Capitol
Hill connections). He said:
things move very slowly on the Hill; petitions will
make no difference
A HEARING BUSINESS SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE DEAF
How many hearing-owned, hearing-run businesses
are sensitive to the needs of the deaf?
There was a story in the newspapers of a taxi company
in South Tyneside, a small town in Great Britain. This
company encourages the deaf to use their pagers to
send texts to them so that taxis could be sent to
pick them up.
Was the owner a Coda? No. Was the owner associated
with the deaf in some capacity? No. He simply felt it
was a good business practice to serve the deaf.
AN INTERESTING CI CONVERSATION
Recently DeafDigest editor had a long conversation
with an old acquaintance who got a CI not too long
ago.
This acquaintance was hard of hearing all his life;
able to function very well with his hearing aid -
following radio and TV programs, without captions,
regular voice telephone conversations, staff meetings
(on a one to one basis, no cross conversations)
and so on. Age made him completely deaf and rendering
the hearing aid useless.
A CI operation was the trick - he now is able to
hear things that he was not able to hear when he
lost his hearing because of age. He feels reborn.
Conversation drifted towards another acquaintance,
also hard of hearing that made great use of his
hearing aid. That acquaintance also had a CI.
Unfortunately it was not a success.
Why was it a failure? The reason, according to
the first acquaintance, was that unrealistic
hopes were raised prior to the operation, and
the letdown was psychological.
Two hard of hearing individuals; both able to
use telephone in the past. Both became deaf because
of age. CI was a success with the first person;
CI was a failure with the second person.
Always a mystery.
BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO AN ARTIST
A deaf artist, who requested anonymity, said that
becoming deaf at late age was the best thing that
happened to her.
Why? She said:
my eyes began to notice shapes, colors and motion
that I would have overlooked during my days as a
hearing person
TALES FROM FORMER DEAF PIZZA DRIVERS
(series to be run on a weekly basis until list of
tales run out)
I applied for a job at a local Pizza Hut outlet. The manager
asked me many stupid questions, wondering how could a deaf
person communicate with customers.
I then asked him to ride with me in my car and watch
me deliver pizzas. The manager agreed, and after one
ride, hired me on the spot. It helped I knew the area
and was able to get to the address as quick as possible.
I eventually became his best driver at Pizza Hut!
If you are a former Deaf Pizza Driver and have an
interesting tale, please share it with:
