- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

Sudden Hearing Syndrome

Sign language learning without courses
http://deafdigest.com/signlanguagelearning/

- Very Hot News

Your favorite TV program has lousy captions. In the
past you may have felt helpless dealing with
indifferent TV stations and lackadaiscal engineers.
Not any more, if FCC intends to stick to its most
recent mandate – that lousy captioning complaints
be given immediate attention. Will this mandate
work? DeafDigest hope so because timetable on
complaints are not spaced in days but in months!
Bottom line – who will remember a bad captioning
that took place two months ago on a long forgotten
TV episode!

- Thursday February 25th

The New York City board of education wanted to
transfer a group of hearing students in one
public school to 47 School for the Deaf.  The
Deaf Community screamed and threatened to make
a big stink out of it at a scheduled public
hearing. The city backed off, but said it is
for the time being. Just stay tuned.

- Friday February 26th

The plans for the 2010 French Quarter Festival
in New Orleans have been announced. It will
take place on April 9-11. The event poster
has been designed by Christy Works-Boutte.
She is deaf and graduated from the
Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota,
Florida.

- Saturday February 27th

A group of future engineers, scientists and technicians
at Rochester School for the Deaf? Why not, since the
school will be fielding a robotics team that will
compete at the Robotics competition that will be
taking place next weekend at RIT. The deaf group
will not go at it alone; they’re being schooled by
a support group of robotics-knowledgeable mentors
in the community, both deaf and hearing. The team

FRUSTRATIONS IN WATCHING CAPTIONS
Many of us have watched a football game or
a basketball game on TV, but cannot follow
the scores because the captions hide it.
We have complained for years but this
problem continues.
One captioner said he can move the captions
away from the scores; the reason why he
doesn’t move it because he does not watch
the captions while he is typing very fast
to keep up with the voices.
He also said that the engineers in the
TV room can move the captions away from the
scores. But many of them don’t, and it is
frustrating.

ORAL STORIES ON DEAF HISTORY
Deaf researchers and deaf historians use their
video equipment to tape signed interviews with
older deaf people. This is for deaf history
archives.
Do they interview older hearing people for
deaf history archives?
One deaf man wanted to know more about his
famous deaf grandfather. He went to a small town
where the grandfather grew up and asked questions
with some older hearing people. They all gave
him plenty of tales!

THE NAD AND THE JFAAN
There was an announcement that the NAD has become
part of the JFAAN.
What is JFAAN? Spelled in full, it is The Justice
for All Action Network. What is it supposed to do?
It is to work with other disabled-related organizations
in hopes of exerting influence with the national policies,
politics, media and culture.
A new concept, it is? Hardly, during the seventies
we had the same thing – but under a different name,
the American Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities
(ACCD). At that time, the agenda was ADA, 504, etc.
TDI was part of the ACCD, but much disagreement
ensued with the organizational goals, policies
and procedures, and so, it pulled out. It slowly
led to the eventual collapse of ACCD.

A LONG TIME AGO DEAF FIREFIGHTER IN SMALL TOWN
When a person passes away, and if there are no
newspaper articles about him, then he may be be
a mystery generations later.
Eddie Wales, who was deaf, was both a boxer and
a firefighter in Ballymoney, a small town in
Northern Ireland during the thirties and forties.
To be deaf and to be a firefighter is interesting,
hence the mystery as to his firefighting duties.
Did he enter the buildings and fight fires or
was he relegated to light firefighting duties or
was he relegated to the support staff?
We shall never know!

THE WARREN BUFFETT CONNECTION TO IOWA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Warren Buffett, described as the world’s most successful
investor, lives in Omaha. He, however, has a connection
with the Iowa School for the Deaf which is across the river
in Council Bluffs.
J. Schuyler Long, the school principal years way back,
has the high school building named after him. Long’s
granddaughter is the late Susan Thompson Buffett. She was
Warren’s late wife.

A MISLEADING ADVICE
An advice column in a newspaper said:

Speak easy, the deaf will understand

Deaf will understand? Not always; lip reading is
tricky. And the deaf person would hate it if the
hearing person would “exaggerate” his lip movements.
Instead, if the deaf person does not understand, then
be ready with notepad and pen.

A DEAF MANAGER OF A RESTAURANT
Big restaurants are operated by managers; it is a huge
responsibility – making sure nothing goes wrong and dealing
with small crises every day.
Crises can drive hearing managers crazy, and so, is it
a good profession for a deaf person in the hospitality
business?
Well, Nancy Watson, who is deaf, is the manager of
the Kona Grill in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

OUR ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
We have many, many organizations, both national and
local, that serve deaf and hard of hearing people.
One such organization is:

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The Association for Airline Passenger Rights
has requested that the US Department of Transportation
require airplanes to install captions on in-flight
movies.

Would it be a sticky issue? What if the plane starts
its flight in Europe enroute to an American city?
Would the airline refuse to install captions on
grounds that ADA does not extend beyond American
borders?
