Do we have this type of arrangement in USA? Sadly, no!
..
Members of the armed forces run into risk of
deafness while on combat duty. Once discharged
honorably, they need to deal with their deafness.
Some of them wish to attend classes in colleges.
Gallaudet University is developing programs to help
deafened veterans while they attend classes on
the campus.
DeafDigest editor remembers two late-deafened
veterans of the Vietnam war that enrolled at
Gallaudet during the sixties. They got involved
in campus life and varsity sports.
One of them became a psychologist, working
with deaf patients.
..
The Association of Art Museum Directors is
upset. Reason was that the Orange County Museum of Art,
on the sly, sold pieces of art works by famed deaf
artist Granville Redmond.
The anger was that the paintings were sold without
being publicly advertised through normal procedures.
And to make the whole thing insulting was that the
private collector paid little for these works.

GRADUATING FROM SFVSC
If an older deaf person came to you and told you
he graduated from SFVSC, would you know what SFVSC
means? You probably will be confused.
It means San Fernando Valley State College. This
name was changed to CSUN (California State University
at Northridge).
It was at SFVSC when National Leadership Training
Program (NLTP) started. It died at CSUN because of
lack of federal funding. Many NLTP graduates became
deaf agency CEOs and deaf school superintendents.
Currently CSUN has a large number of deaf students
attending classes on the campus, and challenges
Gallaudet and NTID during Deaf Collegiate Bowls.

SOMETIMES HARD TO GIVE BUSINESS TO THE DEAF
We have some deaf dentists, some deaf doctors,
some deaf architects, etc.
We should try to give business to these deaf
professionals. but sometimes it is hard or
impossible. Why?
This is an example. A deaf person wanted a
deaf architect to design and build a house for
him and his family.
The deaf architect turned him down. Reason
was that the architect was not familiar with
the town's zoning regulations and construction
license requirements. He told the deaf person
to find a hearing architect that knows the
town's laws and regulations.
So, the deaf architect lost business but
was honest about it.
A HARD-TO-BELIEVE STORY
There was a story of a deaf man in the Australian
Outback who was stuck for hours in the lobby of a
government building. He was not able to get inside
because no one was around to be of assistance to
him.
There was a button on the wall, asking people to
call out who they wanted.
According to the government spokesperson the
deaf man had "no ability to push the button and
ask for who he wanted".
The embarrassed government agency promised to
look into this matter.
The "no ability" comment is vague. Could mean
many things.
UNDER PUBLIC'S GLARE
Many hearing celebrities say the wrong thing
when subjected to hard ball questioning by famous
TV commentators such as David Letterman, Katie
Couric and Charlie Gibson. Comments by Sarah
Palin come to mind.
We, the deaf, are not safe. During these two
Gallaudet presidential protests, certain
deaf individuals have said wrong things when
subjected to questions by the media.
And even a smooth hearing spokesperson on
behalf of Gallaudet - Jane Bassett Spilman,
the past chairperson of the Gallaudet board of
trustees, said:
Deaf people are not ready to function in a hearing world
She denied making that statement, saying it was
all twisted out of context, but the damage was done!
THE IMPORTANCE OF ARCHIVES
How important is the archives? Or even of a
library?
Very important - especially to national organizations
of the deaf.
Leaders come and go. Board members come and go.
And no one remembers what happened 5 years ago, 10
years ago, or even 25 years ago.
This is where archives or a library comes in.
For a certain organization of the deaf, this is a
painful lesson. This organization has had a library
in the past, but for some reason, it fell into disuse
and out of favor.
This current organization president has been asking
around, among past board members to fill in historical
gaps.
This should have never happened, but it happened.

HEARING AIDS OR EDUCATION OF THE DEAF
Which is more important - giving away free hearing
aids for the deaf, or establishing free education
for the deaf?
Both are equally important. Not always that so
in Brunei. Hearing aids are freely given out to
the deaf residents of Brunei. But the nation would
not pour money to train teachers of the deaf nor to
improve the schools for the deaf.
Misguided spending priorities? Yes.
MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF

She and her ex-husband John Warner, senator from Virginia,
was featured on the front cover of one of these past
editions of NAD Broadcaster
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
complained an interpreter:
being told, after an interpreting assignment -
you are a wonderful interpreter.
I would then ask -
do you know sign language? And the response is always no!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In the last ten days, the big change from analog TV to digital
TV has taken place. Many people who waited until the last
minute to make the change have been scrambling to get their
televisions ready to receive digital
programming.
If you recently have gotten a converter box and you are
experiencing problems with closed captioning, here are a
couple problems that other people have reported having with
closed captioning and what you should do about them.
If you turn on the converter box and see a double row of
overlapping captions, it may mean that you are seeing
captions through both your television and your converter box.
You should turn off the closed captioning function
either on your television or on the converter box.
If you are using the converter box with an analog TV set
and cannot see any captions at all, you should contact
the manufacturer of the converter box.
If you are able to get captions when you tune to one station,
but not another, most likely this is not a problem
with your converter box. You should contact the television
station airing the program that does not have captions.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF A MAINSTREAMED PROGRAM IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT?
an itinerant teacher
(in many school districts we would expect a principal,

with an appropriate title that would direct their mainstreamed
programs; some districts are different and this reflects in
a startling title above. Be surprised or shocked every week
until series run out)

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Afraid of being a party to scams, the huge Wells
Fargo financial institution is refusing to accept
relay calls from deaf clients.
They are insisting that we, the deaf, use the
TTY. Many of us have junked the TTY, and yet they
continue to repeat this insistence!
..
The Deaf and the Law
Q. Why do some attorneys affix the word "Esquire"
to their names whereas others don't?
A. Said a deaf attorney:
"Esquire" usually denotes a licensed attorney.
If you just see "J.D." next to a title, that usually
means that the person has a law degree, but is not
licensed to practice. But in my case, only time I've
ever used it was to write letters to college
administrators who aren't providing deaf students with
interpreting as a subtle way of intimidating them.
..
DeafADA Issue of the Week:
When the ADA Restoration Act came up two years
ago, no deaf organization surfaced as supporters,
except for the Hearing Loss Association of America.
Lack of cohesion between national organizations
of the deaf and of the hard of hearing has always
been a problem from Day One.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The David Bruton update in North Carolina;
* the rally was well attended by the deaf all demanding
the ouster of the state Secretary of Health and Human
Services
* Bruton, who did not face the protesters, has continued
to defend his statement that teaching ASL to deaf kids
is child abuse
* Bruton's defenders said the statement was a misunderstanding
* Bruton's statement contradicts the federal law that allows
parents to select speech or sign language for their deaf
children
* the state governor is not planning to ask Bruton to resign
but is asking that all parties work together
..
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, established
in 1901, signed a merger agreement with the Catholic Order
of Foresters. This means the Frat is getting out of the
insurance business but will continue in a new direction,
as a fraternal society.
(editor's note: the Frat has since then closed down)
....
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
At an office building where a deaf person is employed,
the building management issued an announcement. It said:
The fire life safety system will be tested tomorrow morning
and the alarm will sound for approximately one minute.
Please disregard the alarm. In the event of a true
emergency during the testing, you will be notified via the
PA system and required to evacuate the building
Now, let us suppose the deaf person is the only person
in the room, and he ignores the alarm, as instructed,
and a real fire takes place. How will he know the real
thing from the fake thing?
....
A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:
One of your customers secures receipts for you to prove
that the bookstore had fraudulently billed you for
books that the customer never used, and the customer
testifies to your supervisor that she didn't buy some
of the books. The following week, other people step
forward and tell your supervisor that you could not
have known the fraudulent billings. As a result,
you are cleared of any wrong doing.
