News of the Week:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Kenneth
Musteen, Benton, Arkansas, who departed us.
A born deaf leader, he was widely involved with
national and state organizations of the deaf and
of the disabled.
Said an acquaintance:
He is a great guy. He was very active and was a
leader of much great reputation, and yet he is
so humble. It is a loss for the Arkansas Deaf
Community
..
Rick Macomber is a professional racer
of standardbred (trotters) horses in
Indiana. He is deaf.
He has been racing professionally since
1997. How has he been doing this year?
Said a Registrar with the United States
Trotting Association:
his 2009 mounts just went over a million!
To compare this half-year with his past
years, his best earnings year was 2007 when
he won $1,793,928 in prize money. At this
rate, he will be a 2 million dollar driver.
For his career, he has won over 12 million
dollars.
..
Why is the upcoming Deaflympics so important
to Taiwan? This nation, under the glare of
the Republic of China, is anxious to show the
world that they are capable of staging an
international athletic spectacle.
And if the staging of the Deaflympics is a
success, then they hope it will lead the way
to future hosting of other hearing international
athletic events.
This is why the government is pulling out all stops
to make the Deaflympics pleasant for everyone - the
fans and the athletes.

PARACHUTE JUMP BY A FAMOUS DEAF BOXER
Dummy Mahan, a famous deaf boxer during 1930's,
wanted to become a hearing person. Some people told
him that if he jumped from an airplane on a parachute
he could become a hearing person. They felt that change
of air pressure would help remove deafness.
The deaf boxer was not a smart person; he could not
read well, and could not understand the instructions
on how to use the parachute after jumping.
As a result, he fell to his death!

TWO DEAF COUSINS
Two deaf girls attended the same school for the
deaf at the same time some years ago.
They were cousins, but they did not realize it.
Many years later, they met each other again and
realized that they were cousins!
This is not a surprise. We know of many generations
of deaf families, and as a result, some family members
do not realize they are related to each other.

MICHAEL JACKSON AND HIS DEAF CLASSMATE
While Michael Jackson was much younger and a
high school student, one of his classmates was deaf.
The deaf classmate was Jonathan Weiss, who
currently operates Big Mango, Inc, as a chef/owner,
a Los Angeles Catering/Consulting Company.
Jonathan said:
he sat next to me and was always cordial and very
helpful in case I didn't understand the teacher; he
would take notes or repeat what our teachers had to
say; he had the sweetest personality and cared about
others. Since we had no interpreters or notetakers,
I will always cherish the memory forever of what
Michael did for me!
Jonathan, by the way, is expanding his company
and just hired a deaf chef.
CHEMISTRY BETWEEN ACTORS
We watch TV shows; we also watch deaf plays.
Chemistry between the actors is very important.
When there is no chemistry, the show flops.
And even if the actors personally hate each
other, they must push away these personal
feelings.
Now, what about chemistry between deaf
actors?
A deaf theatrical pro said it is the
same thing. The bottom line is that a great
director is needed to get actors to work
together.

A DEAF PERSON AS AIR CONTROLLER?
A deaf person could do anything except to hear.
But could a deaf person become an air controller?
No. One has to hear to function in that job.
Anyway, there was an announcement in the newspapers
of air controllers earning $100,000 per year.
Upon seeing the newspaper story, a deaf man
asked his vocational rehabilitation counselor
about it:
The VR response was this:
Maybe, I'm not sure; you will have to check with them
or see what accommodations they have. Maybe you could
go to school and assist with other air traffic people.
The jobs can be modified or changed for people with
disabilities
Is the comment realistic?
EYES OR THE EARS
Which is more dangerous? Being a hearing jaywalker,
using his ears to listen for horn honking drivers
or being a deaf jaywalker using his eyes to keep
a watch on oncoming cars?
Well, during the upcoming Deaflympics at Taiwan,
the government is telling drivers to slowdown
to allow street walkers cross the roads safely.
They said:
The deaf are at higher risk for traffic accidents
due to impaired sound reception
Are they saying Deaf Eyes are useless in traffic?
MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF
- Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO
His company wants to make sure that the executives are well
qualified for the high level positions they are being hired
to work for.
One of the questions may be like this:
How would you design a car for a deaf person?
DeafDigest is not sure why would a designed car for the
deaf driver be any different from a car designed for the
masses. But one cannot argue with Amazon's successes!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
someone approaching you while you are out shopping and
making a weird comment, like this:
I know you, you're the intruder for the death
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Have you ever asked "Is CART right for me?"
Many people are still not aware of the possibilities of
using CART in an educational setting.
CART may be right for many people in high school and
college. CART can help people with a hearing loss, and
it may also be right for people with certain learning
disabilities and people for whom English is a second
language.
Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is the
method of providing immediate, verbatim, voice-to-text
translation, and it is an approved assistive device under
the provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA).
In a university setting, a student can read along on a
computer screen what is being said by the professor and
the students in the class. They may also be provided a
rough draft transcript of the class proceedings for future
reference.
As more potential students and parents learn about CART
services and the benefits of CART, they may find that CART
is right for them.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF A MAINSTREAMED PROGRAM IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT?
LEA supervisor
LEA may stand for either of the following:
Local Education Authority
Local Educational Agency
Local Education Agency
Local Education Authorities
it is hairsplitting, but there is no difference between either
of these acronyms
(in many school districts we would expect a principal,
or a director or a coordinator or a supervisor or someone
with an appropriate title that would direct their mainstreamed
programs; some districts are different and this reflects in
a startling title above. Be surprised or shocked every week
until series run out)

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
The National Council on Disability wants to know "what works
and what does not for people with disabilities" during its
next meeting in Minneapolis later this month.
Topics to be touched are emergency preparedness, housing,
workforce infrastructure, access to outdoor recreation,
international development, the Developmental Disabilities and
Bill of Rights Act, strategic planning, and the 2010 National
Summit on Disability Policy.
DeafDigest hopes we, the deaf, are part of their agenda.
In many cases in the past, it wasn't.
..
The Deaf and the Law
location:
several
case:
deaf employees of US Postal Service, injured on the
job, have applied for disability benefits
result:
USPS denied their claims, forcing them to continue
working while still injured
comment:
this is a paradox; there was one deaf employee who
was injured but did not want to retire and get the
benefits but was forced to do so. He did not want
to hire an attorney to fight a 800 pound gorilla!
..
DeafADA Issue of the Week:
Have we made progresses in the workplace?
A deaf woman obtained a job as a clerk/typist.
She was hired, but two days later, she was
tested by a company doctor. The question
asked by the doctor was:
Could you read lips?
When the deaf woman said no, she was immediately
fired!
It was way back in 1957.

..
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
How scary is the Supreme Court's definition of
disability? Said Chai Feldblum, a law professor at
Georgetown University - "individuals are disabled
enough to be fired from a job but not disabled enough
to challenge the firing."
..
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
We now have a deaf attorney in Belgium that was elected to the
Flemish Parliament. The woman of such a huge honor is Helga Stevens,
a graduate of University of California law school and an attorney
with the Brussels bar.
Because Belgium is a tri-lingual country, different regions are
autonomous, and the Flemish Parliament takes care of people in their
own region.
Congrats, Helga.
....
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
The extremely powerful, and immensely wealthy AARP organization
broadcast a commercial on TV, touting an automobile insurance plan
for us to buy.
The commercial was not captioned!
Many AARP members are late-deafened; also many AARP
members are deaf.
AARP ignoring their own members?
....
A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:
The school you work with provides you an "open door" to come
in and work with students any time you want, and you are
able to get all 25 of your school's seniors VR plans approved
by your supervisor in March----quite an accomplishment in the
age of youth allegedly thinking only of themselves.
