Google said all videos will be captioned, thanks

great or not so great? The English language has

captioned?

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

It is a Deja vu in Deaf Sports as far as France is concerned.
It has always been an issue between Deaf Sports and Disabled
Sports in that the latter wishes to control our sports. And
that we, the deaf, wish to control our sports.

The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) could not
reach agreement with the Federation Francaise Handisport (FHH),
on allowing the French deaf to control their own sports.

As a result, FHH "terminated" the meeting. The ICSD is now seeking
legal means with various international sports bodies.

In a statement, ICSD said:

ICSD remains committed to find solution for French Deaf Athletes

A CANCELLED CI OPERATION
A deaf man was scheduled to have a CI implant at
a hospital.
He arrived at the hospital, and the operating room
staff got him ready for the operation.
He waited for a long time, and was told to go home,
because the operation was canceled.
Why was it canceled? Because the CI people did not have
their own CI operation equipment and surgical tools. These
were missing and cannot be found.
   A deaf doctor said:

Happens frequently - each surgeon has his own list of
equipment for each operation, and sometimes the operating
room staff cannot find the stuff!

A HIDDEN BEDROOM AT NAD HEADQUARTERS
For many years the National Association of the Deaf
had its headquarters at the Halex House in Silver
Springs, Maryland.
Halex House had many offices on three floors. In one of
the offices there was a hidden (or secret) bedroom. Many
people worked at the Halex House without knowing about
that secret bedroom.
A former NAD CEO used that secret bedroom as his
"free" apartment.
When the board of directors found out about it, they
kicked him out of the free bed room but also forced him
to resign!

THIS 4-YEAR OLD DEAF KID IS A WOW !
A newspaper story was written up like this:

His 4-year-old son is deaf, yet he can put on his shoes,
use the bathroom, and warm up Hot Pockets in the
microwave.

Is it supposed to be a "wow" because the child is
deaf?
It is not a "wow" because all 4-year old children,
both deaf and hearing, are supposed to have learned
how to perform these simple every day tasks.

A CSUN DECAL IN WASHINGTON, DC
In a Washington, DC supermarket parking lot,
DeafDigest editor spotted a CSUN decal in the back
of the car.
The CSUN decal was fingerspelled. Should we assume
it is a deaf transfer student or a deaf graduate
student from CSUN that is attending Gallaudet?
Or is it a hearing student that bought the decal
because he liked the idea of fingerspelling?

COMPARING MATLIN WITH OTHER OSCAR WINNERS
The USA Today, March 4th edition, ran a piece on
past Oscar winners. As we all know, Marlee Matlin
won an Oscar in 1986.
The article ran a list of Oscar winners' future
acting roles, within 5 years of their win. Morgan
Freeman had 16 roles, Whoopi Goldberg, 14 roles,
Anthony Hopkins, 14 roles, Jim Broadbent, 14 roles
and Michael Caine, 13 roles.
Marlee Matlin? She landed 4 roles in 5 years
after her Oscar win.
This may be misleading because the older Marlee
got, the more roles she has landed. Many other Oscar
winners were not so lucky!

POSITIONS GAINED AT VIRGINIA SCHOOL FOR DEAF &amp; BLIND
Amid budgetary cuts affecting many residential schools
for the deaf, Virginia School for the Deaf &amp; Blind
has gained 37 authorized positions. These positions
were backed by general fund money.
How is this happening? The state legislature
agreed to the increase of positions two yeas ago
in a budgetary two-year cycle - before - funding
crisis got worse and worse.
The disclaimer is that lawmakers may still
try to take back some of these authorized positions.
Let's hope it will never happen.

A POLICE TRAINING SCENARIO
Police departments across USA have their own training
sessions, where rookie and veteran officers go through
different scenarios.
As described in a newspaper story:

In a simulated traffic stop scenario, a trainer playing the
driver got out of his vehicle and approached me. The
"driver" handed me a card saying he was deaf. Good thing
I didn't shoot him with a fake pistol, even if he was obviously
ignoring my commands to stay in his car.

This has happened in real life to a leader of a deaf
community. In a real traffic stop he was instructed, via
gestures, to stay in his car. He didn't and the police
officers swooped on him. Fortunately, nothing serious
came out of it

Would it be a sticky issue? What if the plane starts

Would the airline refuse to install captions on

the school nursing staff. As a result, there were no

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced
with a second defective implant that later failed.

- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Avril D. Thompson,
not deaf, who departed us recently. She abandoned her
promising career as a professional singer when
her son was born deaf. Wanting the best for her son,
she wanted him enrolled at Texas School for the Deaf.
Local educators (Houston) told her no; he had to stay
home and attend local schools. She fought them and
won - and which led to state legislators approving
a law that gave parents of the deaf more options
in the educational needs of their children. Currently
Texas is one of the few states that allow parents
to bypass local districts to send their children to
residential schools.

- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

long wait to repair a broken hearing aid
<a href="../brokenhearingaid/" target="_blank">http://deafdigest.com/brokenhearingaid/</a>

- Very Hot News

The Ohio Supreme Court threw out a murder
conviction that was deliberated by a jury
that consisted of a deaf juror. The defense
argument, that the Court agreed, was that
there was no way a deaf juror could
understand the voice nuances in the 911 call
that was introduced as piece of evidence.
Two members of the state Supreme Court did
not agree but was outvoted 5-2.

- Sunday February 28th

New Zealand's National Foundation for the Deaf is pushing
late deafened people to submit their compensatory claims
for their hearing losses to the government's Accident
Compensation Corporation. This government group would
only compensate the late deafened whose loss has
reached the 6 percent hearing loss threshold.

Six percent? Exactly what does that mean because there is
no such a thing as hearing loss measured in percentages;
hearing loss is measured in decibels.

- Monday March 1st

Maggie Wittland is a hearing mother of Hannah, a
deaf child. They live in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Fearing for the safety of her daughter playing
outside she wanted the city to put up a
Deaf Child sign on their street. Council Bluffs
said no, not because of attitude but because
this municipality does not put up these signs!
One thing about Deaf Child signs; these stay
put for years, even when the deaf child has
grown up and has become an adult and has
moved out!

- Tuesday March 2nd

The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,
West Allis, Wisconsin is no more - only because
it has changed its name to the Center for
Communication, Hearing &amp; Deafness. This
center has been in business for 80 years.

- Wednesday March 3rd

Add Kentucky to the growing shortlist of
states that have introduced moviehouse
captioning bills. There are doubts, however,
that the Kentucky bill will pass, but the
fact that it was introduced is a "step in
the door"

A STUPID LANDLORD IN ENGLAND
It happened few years ago. A hearing landlord refused to
rent an apartment to a deaf-blind man.
The deaf-blind man sued, and won. It cost the landlord
three things:

- to pay a lawyer in legal fees
- to pay the deaf-blind man a lot of money for punishment
- to allow deaf-blind man to live rent-free for rest of his life!

THE FAMOUS BASKETBALL MOVIE - THE HOOSIERS
The famous movie, the Hoosiers, was produced in 1986. It
is still the best basketball movie in Hollywood history.
The character, Jimmy Chitwood, who scored the last second
basket to help his high school win the state championship,
was supposed to be deaf. It was part of the script. And
in fact, there was a brief conversation among the actors
during the filming that mentioned Chitwood's deafness.
Unfortunately, the film editors, cut out the
scene that mentioned Chitwood's deafness!

THESE PUZZLING COMMERCIALS
We watch these TV commercials where the corporate
TTY numbers are listed at the bottom of the screen for
the benefit of deaf consumers?
TTY is practically obsolete and on its way out the door.
Do these corporations realize that?

GALLAUDET AND GEORGE WASHINGTON'S DREAM
First president George Washington had a dream.
He wanted a national university to be located in
Washington, DC.
His dream did not work out, but there are two
federally funded universities in Washington, DC -
Howard University and Gallaudet University.
So, in a way, Washington's dream worked out,
years after his death.

THE CI AS A PIECE OF EVIDENCE
A Bones TV series ran an old episode this week
on a CI as a piece of evidence!
   The leading characters were investigating
burnt human bones when they discovered remnants of
a charred CI piece.
Investigating, they found serial numbers on that
CI, which helped them solve the crime.
DeafDigest is not sure if it was the first time
a CI was part of a TV episode. In the past it was
either a lip reading deaf witness, or a ASL signing
character that helped solve a TV crime.
Interestingly enough, it was never a hearing aid
that was part of a criminal investigation, but now
this - a CI !

HEARING OR DEAF ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
Schools for the deaf and social service agencies
both have board of directors. Many board members
are hearing, as well as deaf.
Which is more important to the mission -
deaf board members or hearing board members?
Both are equally important! Hearing people,
with their contacts in the business and political
circles, are important. Deaf people, with their
knowledge of Deaf Rights, ADA issues, Deaf
Empowerment issues, are just as equally
important.
Both cannot live without each other.

A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Q. How important is the VRS to the quality of our lives?

A. Very much so, not just for the deaf, but for the
deaf-blind, the hard of hearing, the oral, and other
segments in the hearing impaired community

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

a question like this -

why do you sign? Deaf people can lip read.

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

People have asked why captioning sometimes appears when a program is
aired on one channel and then disappears when the program is later
broadcast on a different channel or on the Internet.

Just because something is captioned once does not mean it will remain
captioned in future broadcasts. Sometimes a television program is
shown in different forms on different stations. The program may be
shown on broadcast TV, cable, satellite, in-home video, or
syndication.

Many times the program may be re-edited for later broadcast. If a
program is re-edited, it needs to be captioned again. Sometimes a
new distributor of a program may be unaware that the program was
captioned when it first aired and may show it without captions.

Another problem occurs when shows are broadcast on TV and later
appear on the Internet. Even though the programming was captioned
when shown on TV, most times it will not be captioned on the
Internet. While the FCC requires closed captioning for most
television broadcasts, that is not true for the Internet. The FCC
does not currently require captioning on the Internet, DVDs, or video
games.

The Deaf and the Law

In Trinidad, the law books say:

If, however, you have ever been convicted of an
arrestable or indictable offence, are of unsound
mind, or imbecile or deaf, or blind or afflicted
with any other permanent infirmity of body or mind;
or have been declared bankrupt, then you are
disqualified from ever sitting as a juror.

In simple English, the deaf Trinidians cannot
serve on a jury

What became of?

Tom Bastean

- past

Gallaudet football linebacker, the hero of
the 1970 homecoming day game against DC
Teachers College; Gallaudet was leading
19-14 in the dying minutes when DC Teachers
moved the ball, gaining ground, and threatening
to score to win the game. Tom intercepted their
pass and returned it for a long touchdown run
to put the game out of reach. He, also, was part
of the famous 1971 Dirty Thirty team.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

A school for the deaf being soundproofed for
airplane noises?
Yes, and the affected school is Lexington
School for the Deaf which is in the backyard
of New York's LaGuardia Airport.
The Port Authority will be spending
$100,000 to soundproof the school.
Remember there are hard of hearing students
and also hearing people that work at the school.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Years ago, DeafDigest editor was employed by
a deaf social service agency.
He never forgot an incident - regarding noise.
On that particular day, there was a group of
hearing visitors. The Deputy Director was concerned
that the noise, from deaf employees and from deaf
clients, would disturb the visitors.
She asked all deaf people in the building to
quiet it down. All deaf employees complied
with the request - except for one employee,
shouting at the top of his lungs, accusing
hearing people of discriminating against the
deaf!

Go figure!

- Very Hot News</p>
<p>Your favorite TV program has lousy captions. In the<br />
past you may have felt helpless dealing with<br />
indifferent TV stations and lackadaiscal engineers.<br />
Not any more, if FCC intends to stick to its most<br />
recent mandate &#8211; that lousy captioning complaints<br />
be given immediate attention. Will this mandate<br />
work? DeafDigest hope so because timetable on<br />
complaints are not spaced in days but in months!<br />
Bottom line &#8211; who will remember a bad captioning<br />
that took place two months ago on a long forgotten<br />
TV episode!</p>

- Thursday February 25th</p>
<p>The New York City board of education wanted to<br />
transfer a group of hearing students in one<br />
public school to 47 School for the Deaf.  The<br />
Deaf Community screamed and threatened to make<br />
a big stink out of it at a scheduled public<br />
hearing. The city backed off, but said it is<br />
for the time being. Just stay tuned.</p>

<p>A group of future engineers, scientists and technicians<br />
at Rochester School for the Deaf? Why not, since the<br />
school will be fielding a robotics team that will<br />
compete at the Robotics competition that will be<br />
taking place next weekend at RIT. The deaf group<br />
will not go at it alone; they&#8217;re being schooled by<br />
a support group of robotics-knowledgeable mentors<br />
in the community, both deaf and hearing. The team<br />
web site is at: http://www.team3162.com</p>

<p>FRUSTRATIONS IN WATCHING CAPTIONS<br />
Many of us have watched a football game or<br />
a basketball game on TV, but cannot follow<br />
the scores because the captions hide it.<br />
We have complained for years but this<br />
problem continues.<br />
One captioner said he can move the captions<br />
away from the scores; the reason why he<br />
doesn&#8217;t move it because he does not watch<br />
the captions while he is typing very fast<br />
to keep up with the voices.<br />
He also said that the engineers in the<br />
TV room can move the captions away from the<br />
scores. But many of them don&#8217;t, and it is<br />
frustrating.</p>

ORAL STORIES ON DEAF HISTORY<br />
Deaf researchers and deaf historians use their<br />
video equipment to tape signed interviews with<br />
older deaf people. This is for deaf history<br />
archives.<br />
Do they interview older hearing people for<br />
deaf history archives?<br />
One deaf man wanted to know more about his<br />
famous deaf grandfather. He went to a small town<br />
where the grandfather grew up and asked questions<br />
with some older hearing people. They all gave<br />
him plenty of tales!</p>

THE NAD AND THE JFAAN<br />
There was an announcement that the NAD has become<br />
part of the JFAAN.<br />
What is JFAAN? Spelled in full, it is The Justice<br />
for All Action Network. What is it supposed to do?<br />
It is to work with other disabled-related organizations<br />
in hopes of exerting influence with the national policies,<br />
politics, media and culture.<br />
A new concept, it is? Hardly, during the seventies<br />
we had the same thing &#8211; but under a different name,<br />
the American Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities<br />
(ACCD). At that time, the agenda was ADA, 504, etc.<br />
TDI was part of the ACCD, but much disagreement<br />
ensued with the organizational goals, policies<br />
and procedures, and so, it pulled out. It slowly<br />
led to the eventual collapse of ACCD.</p>
<p>
A LONG TIME AGO DEAF FIREFIGHTER IN SMALL TOWN<br />
When a person passes away, and if there are no<br />
newspaper articles about him, then he may be be<br />
a mystery generations later.<br />
Eddie Wales, who was deaf, was both a boxer and<br />
a firefighter in Ballymoney, a small town in<br />
Northern Ireland during the thirties and forties.<br />
To be deaf and to be a firefighter is interesting,<br />
hence the mystery as to his firefighting duties.<br />
Did he enter the buildings and fight fires or<br />
was he relegated to light firefighting duties or<br />
was he relegated to the support staff?<br />
 We shall never know!</p>
<p>
THE WARREN BUFFETT CONNECTION TO IOWA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF<br />
Warren Buffett, described as the world&#8217;s most successful<br />
investor, lives in Omaha. He, however, has a connection<br />
with the Iowa School for the Deaf which is across the river<br />
in Council Bluffs.<br />
 J. Schuyler Long, the school principal years way back,<br />
has the high school building named after him. Long&#8217;s<br />
granddaughter is the late Susan Thompson Buffett. She was<br />
Warren&#8217;s late wife.</p>
<p>
A MISLEADING ADVICE<br />
An advice column in a newspaper said:</p>
<p>Speak easy, the deaf will understand</p>
<p> Deaf will understand? Not always; lip reading is<br />
tricky. And the deaf person would hate it if the<br />
hearing person would &#8220;exaggerate&#8221; his lip movements.<br />
Instead, if the deaf person does not understand, then<br />
be ready with notepad and pen.</p>
<p>A DEAF MANAGER OF A RESTAURANT<br />
Big restaurants are operated by managers; it is a huge<br />
responsibility &#8211; making sure nothing goes wrong and dealing<br />
with small crises every day.<br />
Crises can drive hearing managers crazy, and so, is it<br />
a good profession for a deaf person in the hospitality<br />
business?<br />
Well, Nancy Watson, who is deaf, is the manager of<br />
the Kona Grill in Lincolnshire, Illinois.</p>

Would the airline refuse to install captions on<br />

<p>Weitz &amp; Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs&#8217; litigation<br />
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national<br />
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical<br />
devices.  Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced<br />
Bionics related to defective cochlear implants implanted in young<br />
 children and adults.</p>
<p>Some of the firm&#8217;s clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries<br />
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced<br />
with a second defective implant that later failed.</p>
<p>If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear<br />

<p>- Dedication</p>
<p>DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jules Duquin,<br />
Buffalo, NY, who departed us. He wore several hats,<br />
 a technician with a precision machinery control<br />
 company, a well-respected basketball and softball<br />
referee. And also maintained the local TTY network<br />
in the Buffalo deaf community during the sixties<br />
and seventies. And when decoders came out in the<br />
eighties, he made sure these devices worked properly<br />
 in these deaf homes.</p>

<p>- Very Hot News</p>
<p>Arizona lawyers versus the anti-captions Arizona movie<br />
 chain &#8211; an update:</p>
<p>both parties were ordered to negotiate. The chain made a<br />
weak offer, which was quickly turned down. A lot of<br />
captioning advocates have been pushing the Arizona<br />
attorneys not to settle for too little, and that the<br />
DC, New York and New Jersey settlements should not<br />
 be the standard.</p>
<p>And as a sidebar, Maryland House bill 1463, only very<br />
 recently introduced asks that:</p>
<p>Requiring a specified place of public accommodation to provide access to<br />
closed-captioning technology for deaf and hard of hearing individuals;<br />
requiring the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, in<br />
consultation with the Governor&#8217;s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,<br />
to identify and approve the appropriate technology to provide reasonable<br />
accommodation and to set the minimum number of showings in which<br />
closed-captioning technology is required at a movie theater; etc.</p>

<p>Are we seeing a Beethoven in British composer Lloyd Coleman?<br />
He is deaf, been deaf all his life. Yet deafness did not<br />
stop him from loving classical music and being great<br />
with it. And he is just 17 years old, and he has already<br />
attracted attention and already written up in British<br />
 newspapers.</p>
<p>- Monday February 22nd</p>
<p>Members of the alumni of Clarke School for the Deaf<br />
are upset. The school have changed its name only<br />
that the alumni was not made aware of it.<br />
It is now the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech.<br />
Not keeping the alumni informed of the name<br />
change in advance is a big time mistake. It was<br />
the  alumni, over the years, that raised the high<br />
profile of the school. A school, any school, is<br />
only as good as the solid alumni base behind it.</p>

<p>A deaf baby and a loud talking mother? This is<br />
what researchers at the University of Western Sydney<br />
in Australia are saying. In a way, DeafDigest is<br />
puzzled &#8211; if the baby is profoundly deaf, what good<br />
 is a loud-speaking mother? Human nature, though<br />
 flawed?</p>

<p>Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:</p>
<p>A group of Japanese attorneys, all hearing, are<br />
upset that a deaf person could not get an<br />
 interpreter for participation in a jury.<br />
 Japanese constitution specifically allows<br />
the a deaf person to become a juror with<br />
proper accommodations. This was not done.<br />
As a result, the attorney group is demanding<br />
an official explanation from the judiciary<br />
group that rejected the would-be deaf juror.</p>

<p>THE KEYBOARD AND THE DEAF<br />
The keyboard has always been important to the<br />
deaf. First, it was the TTY, then it was the computer<br />
for e-mail and now for deaf pagers.<br />
Will the keyboard disappear? Voice technology may<br />
cause keyboards to disappear. In the future hearing<br />
people can use voice to operate the computer.<br />
We must make sure that computer manufacturers<br />
will always keep the keyboard even though voice<br />
 technology is coming up soon.</p>

<p>DEAF PEOPLE IN FIJI<br />
Fiji is a nation, way out in the Pacific Ocean,<br />
and it has about 320 islands, but most people<br />
live in two Fiji islands.<br />
Anyway there was a research that said that<br />
almost six percent of the Fiji people are<br />
 deaf.<br />
Six percent of population is high. Why is<br />
 it that?<br />
DeafDigest guesses it is because of<br />
interbreeding among the natives of Fiji<br />
that causes deafness? Nothing about interbreeding<br />
was mentioned in the research report.</p>

<p>SUDDEN HELPLESSNESS<br />
What is Sudden Helplessness? It is when<br />
an interpreter does the unexpected. Examples<br />
 are:</p>
<p>- making personal uncalled for comments during the conference<br />
&#8211; asking to be excused to go to the restroom<br />
&#8211; distorting the comments by conference participants<br />
 &#8211; skipping scheduled assignments</p>
<p>Can&#8217;t happen? Wrong, it has happened. What is the<br />
 moral?<br />
Just make sure your interpreters are RID certified.<br />
RID standards are the best in the world.</p>

<p>COMMENTS FROM A HEARING ACTOR<br />
We, the deaf, have complained for years that<br />
deaf roles in movies and theater have been given<br />
to hearing actors, that know no sign language.<br />
This is a sticky issue among actors. They<br />
pride themselves on being able to play any role.<br />
Even Marlee Matlin herself said the same thing.<br />
In a newspaper interview, actor Mandy Patinkin,<br />
 not deaf, said:</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve had arguments over this kind of thing for years;<br />
the first time was with the National Theatre of the Deaf<br />
director who felt the deaf part should be played by a<br />
 deaf person. I don&#8217;t disagree with that, but I’m an<br />
actor and I want to play a deaf person, too. It&#8217;s a<br />
competitive business. I&#8217;m here to be an actor and<br />
 I&#8217;ll play any role.</p>
<p>On the flip side, Darren Fudenske, a part time<br />
deaf actor in New York, played a hearing role in<br />
 a small off-Broadway play!</p>
<p>ALWAYS A DUBIOUS CLAIM<br />
What is a dubious claim to DeafDigest editor?<br />
It is when a person says he is the first to<br />
do something, or is the only person to do something.<br />
A perfect example is the claim to have started<br />
the first private school for the deaf in California.<br />
Making the claim is Lois Huter Tarkanian, whose<br />

<p>QUEENSLAND&#8217;S ONLY DEAF ATTORNEY<br />
Queensland is a state in Australia. It is one of<br />
the nation&#8217;s largest states &#8211; there is only one<br />
attorney, a new one, that would serve the deaf<br />
 community.<br />
That deaf one is Kathryn O&#8217;Brien; she hopes to work<br />
full time for a law firm, concentrating on the deaf<br />
 clientele.</p>
<p>A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK</p>
<p>Q. Is FCC weak and powerless to deal with various VRS issues?</p>
<p>A. No; FCC is big and powerful; the problem is that there are<br />
so many groups pushing their agendas onto the FCC, and we need<br />
to make sure our Deaf Agenda is not being ignored by them.</p>
<p>WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?</p>

<p>COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR &#8211; continuing series</p>
<p>As many people are discussing the Olympics, thoughts may turn to<br />
the medal performances of the phenomenal athletes.  But what is<br />
a topic of conversation among closed captioners who are captioning<br />
 sportscasts across the country?</p>
<p>Some captioners want to know:  What is the proper spelling of the<br />
name Yevgeny Plushenko?  Is it Yevgeny, Evgeny, or Evgeni Plushenko?<br />
Or might it even be Evgeniy Plyushchenko?</p>
<p>One of the greatest challenges for captioners who are captioning the<br />
Olympics presentations and for the many captioners across the country<br />
who are captioning sportscasts is to spell the names of the many,<br />
many athletes from past and present correctly.</p>
<p>Captioners write phonetically and not letter by letter.  So if they<br />
don&#8217;t know how the name is pronounced, it is difficult to put the<br />
name in their computer dictionary so that it would translate<br />
 properly.</p>
<p>A captioner might find the correct pronunciation of a name on a Web<br />
site, but what if the sportscaster found a different pronunciation?<br />
Sometimes it may take a few seconds for the captioner to even figure<br />
out what name was said.  Some names may be spelled differently when<br />
translated from foreign languages, and there may be different<br />
 variations of the same name.</p>
<p>Every time I see the many unusual names come up correctly in the<br />
captioning of a sportscast, I am amazed at the talents and abilities<br />
of many of the closed captioners out there who sometimes may feel<br />
like they are working in an Olympic competition themselves.</p>

<p>I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD&#8230;&#8230;.</p>
<p>hear like a hearing person when he gets a CI</p>
<p>Yes and no. If a person is late deafened, a CI may<br />
greatly benefit him. If a deaf person has been deaf<br />
all his life, without being able to discriminate<br />
sounds and voices, then it requires thousands of hours<br />
of training with CI. Not easy for a much older deaf<br />
person &#8211; tantamount to a much older person, growing<br />
up speaking English and learning a totally new language<br />
in a totally different country! As for infants being<br />
 implanted, jury is still out.</p>
<p>when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life<br />
his knowledge of the deaf are often wrong</p>
<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<br />

<p>HEALTH AND ADVOCACY INFORMATION<br />
FOR PERSON WHO ARE DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING:</p>
<p>Persons who are Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing are<br />
grossly underserved by both the physical health and the<br />
 behavioral health care system.</p>
<p>In many  cases, the patient as well as the health care<br />
provider who may provide service to them, is unaware of<br />
laws that mandate the provision of accommodations in the<br />
health care setting so that all persons have equal access<br />
 to health related information.</p>
<p>A new web site called http://www.healthbridges.info<br />
was created by people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and hard<br />
 of hearing.</p>
<p>Features Include:</p>
<p>*  An Accommodation card for you to print and carry that you can<br />
make for yourself that tells health care providers where to call<br />
for an interpreter in case of emergency</p>
<p>*  Live videos about hospital accommodations</p>
<p>*  Wellness topics that change each month</p>
<p>*  Links to information about counseling services</p>
<p>*  Resources and valuable links about how to find important<br />

<p>Hot DeafNews boring, but important!</p>
<p>When a hearing person speaks, something in<br />
the brain shows up on the scan. When a<br />
deaf person signs, something in the brain<br />
also shows up on the scan. Same scan<br />
 patterns? Possibly, according to<br />
Karen Emmorey, the San Diego State<br />
University linguist. This is probably<br />
 accurate because a talking person and<br />
 a signing person uses same thought<br />
 patterns.</p>

not that easy to fake deafness; they would eventually<br />

<p>News of the Week &#8211; Looking Back 10 Years Ago:</p>
<p>Edna Adler, the Deaf Woman of the Century, as cited<br />
by the Silent News, passed away on February 20th. She<br />
was a long time associate of Boyce Williams at the<br />
old HEW &#8211; and while Boyce got much of the credit for<br />
sweeping social gains in the deaf community, Edna was<br />
the quiet one behind the scenes, working with him<br />
 in unison.</p>
<p>..</p>
<p>News of the Week &#8211; Looking Back 5 Years Ago:</p>
<p>Trouble is brewing in Nevada as far as interpreters<br />
are concerned. State law, as challenged by state department<br />
of education requires RID or NAD certification. The<br />
education people want this to be watered down.</p>
<p>&#8230;.</p>
<p>Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:</p>
<p>a deaf mainstreamed wrestler was written up in the<br />
 newspapers as follows:</p>
<p>he earned a lot of respect for his courage to join<br />
the high school wrestling team despite being deaf</p>
<p>Huh! What is so courageous about the deaf joining<br />
a wrestling team. We have a number of schools<br />
for the deaf with wrestling teams; we also have<br />
many mainstreamed wrestlers that are members of their<br />
high school teams. Matt Hamill was a 3-time NCAA-III<br />
wrestling champion (in 3 different weight classes).<br />
Marty Willigan, who wrestled for Hofstra University,<br />
was a NCAA-I runner up in his weight class. And<br />
 wrestling was Gallaudet&#8217;s #1 sport during the<br />
 1950&#8217;s.</p>
<p>It is no more courageous for the deaf than it is<br />
for the hearing to join a wrestling team.</p>
<p>..</p>
<p>A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor&#8217;s great news:</p>
<p>You are sent to a conference. Fortunately, this includes<br />
free food and hotel, so many different cable TV channels,<br />
and you also get continuing education hours.  The only<br />
catch is you must actually stay awake during the<br />
 conference working time.</p>

<p>A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?</p>
<p>In talking with a co-worker&#8230;</p>
<p>She said&#8211;my daughter said I have high blood pressure<br />
 and gave me a prescription</p>
<p>Then I realized that she said&#8211;my doctor, not my daughter</p>
<p>(she doesn&#8217;t have a daughter)</p>
